3d Documentary Explorer

This visualisation was developed for the Virtual Revolution series on BBC2. It’s interesting from a data visualisation perspective for two reasons; it uses a video as it’s data source and it uses a 3d interface.

    Dear Andy et al,

I love the idea of timecoding information to the video. However, from what I’ve seen so far I would actually prefer simple 2D appearances next to the video so I can see everything at once, like ads. It is a bummer to have to stop the video to navigate through the other materials, and I think it would be great to embed the webpages in frames so you don’t have to navigate away from the video to read them. I am still looking forward to seeing the advantage of 3D navigation over 2D.

      Thanks J,
We’re still trying to get to grips with what works in 3d and what doesn’t. It opens up so many possibilities but sometimes it’s temping to do things just because you can which is a bit dangerous. We’ve not really user tested this interface yet but it’s something we intend to do. Thanks for you feedback, it’s really helpful.
      Cheers
      Andy

    Hello Data Art team,

I write for the website Journalism.co.uk, which reports on new tools and technologies for storytelling/affecting journalists. I’m absolutely fascinated by what’s described above and would love to find out more for a piece.
    Best,
    Laura
